Organic skincare brand Vestige Verdant

Organic skincare brand Vestige Verdant

The amazing organic skincare brand Vestige Verdant was founded by Roone Roost and launched in the end of 2013, but the brand and concept was 2 years in the making prior to the reveal. The research considering the highly mineral rich balneological peat (the core ingredient of Vestige Verdant’s extremely popular Organic Peat Mask) took over 10 years. The research was not done by Roone, but by the bright minds of doctors and leading specialists in the field, Dr. Mall Orru, Dr. Hans Orru, Dr. Monika Übner, to mention a few.

The brand offers a small and unique range of products, consisting of a face-mask, skin oil and an eye serum and they have been praised by prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Bazaar and more.

“Made with the conviction that your body is your temple.”

What is the story behind the brand?

Roone: I’ve done many things in life - I’ve been in the army and served in the scout’s battalion, written a book, traded art, worked in advertising agencies, jumped out of airplanes and attended university in the field of image creation and advertising. The one key take away after all this, to me, has been that in life it best makes sense to go with the flow.

This is relevant because Vestige Verdant is not a brand that was made or built - it’s a brand that (and I agree, this may sound cheesy) was born, nurtured to life and grown. I have merely been a conduit for it. I stumbled across the research concerning balneological peat and its benefits to health and skin and immediately recognised the potential applications in skin care. I also had accumulated the know-how and contacts to make this into a product that people want and need and as a result, I felt an obligation to get it done. There are many easier ways of earning a living, but the idea of having a positive impact to the health, beauty and as a result improved self esteem of countless people around the globe really made this into a I MUST DO THIS idea for me.

Everything started with our facemask and the idea of “beauty must come with benefits not sacrifices” is personally relevant to me. The facemask is special because it has tangible healing properties (although thanks to the massively over regulated EU laws, we can’t exactly advertise the full benefits list); it heals acne and acne scars and overly sensitive skin. It is personally relevant to me because I have a skin condition known as vitiligo (meaning that I have white patches that don’t tan in the summertime). I don’t advertise it but as a result I do know how it feels like if your skin is out of the ordinary and get undesirable attention as a result.

The story behind the brand is my desire to create something timeless and of value - to bring together a healthy way of living, luxurious image and a “manners make the man” attitude all in one mixture. To steer away from the ultra modern and hipster organic image and go more towards a classical image with a dash of modern minimalism. I believe we all can appreciate a bit of Kingsman-ish gentlemanly and ladylike details in our daily lives.

How big is the team of Vestige Verdant?

Our core team is 4 people, together we handle the key aspects of development, brand building and marketing, business and legal and least but not last - sales.

We very much like the name Vestige Verdant! But where does it come from and what does it mean?

Vestige means a sign/relic, Verdant means blooming, lush naturalness. This is Victorian era English. You see, 19th century was the industrial revolution, a change in thought paradigm. This is what we aspire to do today - change the thought paradigm - to instil the belief that “beauty products must come with (health) benefits”.

What makes your brand unique?

We do not have a massive product line-up, but what we do have is the absolute best you can get.

Except the peat, do you use any other "key" ingredients?

Well the peat we use for our facemask is the best in the world and very very unique. As are all the rare oils we use in the Rare Oil Blend facial oil and the Matrixyl3000 (super technical ingredient) in our Infinity eye serum. But the thing is, “key” ingredients are usually a marketing gimmick - trends that come and go; the true key ingredient is our boldness to keep ever-improving our products whilst resisting the temptation to launch them from under new names. We do not set an end date for product R&D - it is an on-going process and we keep on studying and ever improving the products we have, to ensure they stay the best in their respective segments. Of course we are working on new products as well and we have some very special items in the pipeline.

Tell us more about peat?

In a word - magical. The benefits list is truly impressive.

- one of the strongest detoxifying agents out there

- it heals overly sensitive and allergic skin

- it improves blood circulation

- it restores the natural pH balance of the skin

- it improves skin texture

- it binds free radicals

Where do you source your ingredients?

Estonia, Morocco, Nepal, Italy, Germany, Indonesia; basically all around the world. We do our best to ensure it’s all sourced ethically following fair trade principles and also sustainably. The idea is to leave behind a better planet than that which was handed to us.

Where is your product made?

Estonia, Italy, UK - we outsource production because a) it’s an industry standard, b) this enables us to apply the best know-how and production technologies available.

What is your favourite product from your range?

Come now, this is like asking, “which of your children do you love most?"

What are your best tips on maintaining beautiful and healthy skin?

Maintain a positive attitude - feel good in your skin, moisturise, eat well, stop smoking and use quality products. Skin is your biggest organ and the first line of defence for external pollutants; so skipping on quality in skin care is not going to end well.

What motto do you live by?

Be present.

When Dalai Lama was asked what surprises him the most in an interview, he offered this insightful response: “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

It is important to stop (over)thinking every now and then - because when you think too much, the only thing you have to think about is thoughts. Life is precious and it goes by way too fast. We need to be more in the now, more focused and appreciative of NOW because it will never come again. That’s why it makes me a bit sad when I see a gorgeous sunset with some friends and someone inevitably pulls out a phone to Instagram (only to never look at the picture again) but missing part of this glorious event in the process.

What is your ethos when it comes to natural skincare and beauty?

Stay healthy. Feel gorgeous. Be Verdant.

Do you have any future plans in store for Vestige Verdant?

The primary directive of life itself is expansion - both vertically and horizontally. Since I’ve been “going with the flow” until now, it makes sense to go along with this same force that’s driving the universe: make these amazing products available to as many people as possible, make the Vestige Verdant brand known to as many people as possible and keep on developing and launching new and superior products.

As for detailed plans - all will be revealed in due time.
