Danish Design - The National Aquarium
This stunning building is the Danish National Aquarium - Den Blå Planet ('The Blue Planet'), in the Kastrup suburb of Copenhagen. Designed by Danish architects 3XN, the building resembles a whirlpool when seen from above - given that it is located close to the airport a lot of people do get the opportunity to see that view!
The building is covered with diamond shaped aluminium plates which reflect the colour and light of the sky, just as water does, connecting the sea and the landscape. The circular foyer is the central point of navigation in the aquarium, allowing each of the spurs of the building to be accessed so visitors can choose which river, lake or sea to explore.
The aquarium is home to a pair of sea otters - look how cute they are! There is also a jungle exhibition, with crocodiles and piranhas, as well as a shark tunnel, where visitors can walk through a glass tunnel in a huge tank containing hammerhead and reef sharks.
