At home with Underbara Clara

'Underbara Clara' ('Wonderful Clara') is the online name of much-loved Swedish blogger Clara Lidström, who lives in the beautiful Västerbotten countryside in Northern Sweden. Her website is one of the most popular blogs in Sweden, showcasing inspiring interior design, delicious recipes and life with her family in the North. Nordique have had the pleasure chatting to Clara and to get some real design inspiration from her beautiful and original home!

Tell us about your home and what you love the most about it?

I live on a farm in the northern Swedish countryside. The house dates from 1938 and we have renovated it in stages over the last few years to bring back its original look. The thing I love the most about old houses - including mine - are the sounds and smells! The creaking of the floors, and the walls, and the homely, woody smell of the old stove. I love the homely, warmer feel that old houses have.

How would you describe the style of your home?

My home is colourful, cozy and homely. Nothing is perfect, but there's a real eclectic mixture of everything! I love old things and trying to gradually replace all the modern stuff to more original pieces - I think it really adds character to the home.

What is your favourite decorative piece in your home and why?

I actually really love wallpaper - particularly in vintage styles. The bedroom wallpaper is a beautiful, romantic pattern from Cole & Son. Downstairs we have some wallpaper from Vera and Edgar which is colourful while still calm and peaceful in tone. It really sets the home up beautifully!

Can you give your top three design tips to create a Nordic country look?

Use wallpaper instead of painting single block-colour walls! A "bonnig" old wallpaper sets the style and gives a cozy feeling. I also love to use antique furniture - the pieces are often so unique these days and full of character. Rustic details can really add to the Nordic country feel, such as rugs, lace tablecloths, geraniums and delicate small coffee cups - and the flea market is a great place to buy these items!
