jani and the northern lights
Jani Ylinampa is from Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland and works as a safari guide! He takes some outstanding pictures of the Finnish nature and northern lights, we are amazed.
How does your average week look like?
Well, during winter I work as a safari guide for Lapland Safaris, and if I have time and the circumstances are good, I go to photograph the northern lights. When working, I like to do snowshoe safaris and at the same time I get to photograph the snowy forests and landscapes around Rovaniemi. During the off-season I play football and beach volley with my friends and of course, do some photographing. And editing those photographs. For this summer, watching European Championships in football!
How often do you get to see the northern lights?
It depends if the sun has been active, cloudless sky, and if the direction of the magnetic field is favorable (in most cases it has to be negative). With those you have a better than normal chance of seeing them. It can’t be predicted very accurately, I can tell maybe one or two hours beforehand if it’s a good chance to see them. Last season there was probably 40 nights with ok-to-good photographic auroras.
Where is your favorite Nordic destination?
I’d say it’s Norway, especially the coastline down from Trondheim. I love the mountains, fjords and the roads zigzagging between there. And the ferries crossing the fjords. It really is an eye candy for a country!
What's the strangest question someone has asked you about Finland?
Do you have any penguins here? Or polar bears? Do you have any snow during summer?
What do we have to see/do whilst visiting Finland?
Sauna, midnight sun, northern lights, ice-swimming, ice-fishing, snowmobiling
Do you sauna much?
If I had a sauna, I would use it once or twice a week. Otherwise, every time I have a chance (once a day is enough!)
What's your favorite Finnish music?
Few songs from Eppu Normaali, Nightwish, Movetron, Waldo’s People… for others it depends on the song. I discovered music on the 90s, so eurodance is close to my heart.
How do you spend your Saturday evenings?
-In winter, most likely at work, especially in December. During off-season, photographing, editing photographs, watching TV, sometimes going out.
