It's become a global lifestyle trend, and the next big Danish export (after impeccable furniture design, renewable energy solutions and The Killing!). We're sure you've heard of 'hygge', but what does it really mean, and how can you get more hygge in your life as the cold winter nights draw in?!
'Hygge' is a Danish word for which there isn't really an English translation. The closest we can get is probably 'cosy', but it also means having a good time and fun in cosy surroundings. It is a lifestyle approach that the Danes love to follow, particularly in winter, and maybe just one of the reasons that Denmark often tops polls of the happiest places to live!
The concept influences a lot of aspects of Danish home life, from home decoration, to evening activities and cooking. Like the concept of 'lagom' in Sweden, hygge aims at finding peace and happiness in cosy, familiar surroundings - which we're sure you'll agree sounds a wonderful idea when the temperature outside drops, and the nights grow longer.
